July started our new fiscal year, and we need volunteers to chair and work on committees! If you want to get involved with NAWBO on a deeper level, consider joining our dynamic board of directors! These positions generally require about 4-12 hours per month. Some of our greatest needs include Legal Counsel, Newsletter Editor, Chairs for Procurement, Community Members, Corporate Members, and various Public Policy and Public Relations subcommittees. • If you haven't been to a REMARKABLE WOMEN AWARDS LUNCHEON, you're missing out. There's plenty of opportunities to support this great event and gain exposure for your business
• The MENTORING COMMITTEE is looking for a few good women! "Pay it forward" by mentoring a college student from Cal State Fullerton. Join the NAWBO-OC 2003 Mentoring Program.
• PUBLIC POLICY: Statewide Video Conference Aug 25—AB 1643 Contract Service Provider Legislation Update. Thanks to SBC, NAWBO will introduce women business-owners to each other in all the major cities in California so we can talk about issues that impact our companies. This “live” video conference update on AB 1643 brings together all nine NAWBO California chapters. Join in this historic interactive session.
• The COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE is looking for a couple of writers to occasionally proofread and lightly edit articles written by members. We are also still looking for a newsletter editor to compile and edit the news each month.
• The PROGRAM COMMITTEE needs meeting planners and an assistant to greet the speaker and make sure the electronic equipment is working at each meeting.

NAWBO-OC Corporate Sponsor, The Gas Company, and its sister utility, San Diego Gas & Electric, recently reported to the Public Utilities Commission their achievement regarding minority-business-procurement and employee diversity programs. In 2002, the two companies spent more than $175 million—or 25 percent of their total purchasing—with businesses owned by minorities, women, and service-disabled-veterans. "We believe that having an employee and supplier base that reflect the communities we serve is not only the right thing to do, but it's a smart business strategy that keeps us in tune with our customers" said Sempra Utilities President, Ed Guiles.

• Beth Adkisson, TEC chair and immediate past president of NAWBO-OC, is quoted in The Orange County Register's Business Monday section in story by Jan Norman, "Group Therapy." The Aug. 4 article discusses organizations, including TEC, where business owners can counsel one another about business and personal issues they can't share with others.
• An article about customer loyalty written by Liz Schmidt was featured in the July issue of "Inside Biz," a quarterly newsletter mailed to over 1.2 million DISCOVER® card merchants, and featured on the Discover® Business Services website (see article). The Discover® staff writer found Liz's article on her website by doing a search on the Internet.
• Hilary Kaye was quoted in the Orange County Business Journal's recent Special Report on Public Relations. Kaye, president of Hilary Kaye Associates, Inc., a PR firm in Tustin, was one of a small group of PR executives who discussed the challenges of the past year and the prognosis for the coming months. The good news? Kaye and the others agree that things are looking up!
• Attorney Patricia Eyres of Litigation Management & Training Services, Inc. served as guest expert on Publicity Hound Joan Stewart's teleseminar on "Legal Issues You Must Know When Writing Articles for Fee or for Free." Stewart also quotes Eyres in her July 15 e-mail newsletter, responding to a query about copyright. Patricia was also quoted in the May issue of Inc. magazine, in a story headlined "A Thief Within." John Grossmann wrote the story, which chronicles a business embezzlement and the legal action taken. Eyres was among three experts who evaluated the legal outcome.

• NAWBO-OC members Lauraine Bifulco, Barri Carian and Danielle Hewitt were panelists at the June meeting of the British American Business Council. They each brought their expertise to the topic, “Debunking 5 Myths that Hold Small Businesses Back.” In addition, Barri Carian spoke to business owners during a lunch seminar in June hosted by Staffpay.com on “Leading Your Company’s Growth.”
• NAWBO-OC Communications Director and Webmaster, Liz Schmidt, is delighted to announce that she and her husband John adopted their new 6-month old daughter Alexa Valentina Schmidt in Vladimir Russia on July 9, 2003. Due to their travel to Russia, the July and August issues of this newsletter have been combined into one.

• Sandra Field, CSA, MBA, CFP, of Asset Planning, Inc. was named one of the nation's Top Wealth Managers by Bloomberg Wealth Manager Magazine. Sandra is a fee-based financial planner. Congratulations Sandra!
• Attorney Patricia S. Eyres has been named a Certified Speaking Professional by the National Speakers Association. This is the highest earned recognition of professional and platform excellence. Less than 10% of the membership have earned this certification in the last 20 years. Congrats Patricia!
